IEI Releases new education kit for teachers
INDIANAPOLIS (January 17, 2005)--The Insurance Education Institute (IEI) has released a new education kit, free to high school educators who teach insurance.
Risk, Responsibility, Reality: How Insurance Works is a learning tool for high school teachers to educate students about insurance and risk management. This program is a DVD with printed supplemental materials designed to explain the basics of insurance, especially as they are relevant to high school students now or in the foreseeable future, and help students apply them to everyday situations that they can relate to. The program also promotes personal responsibility as a route to controlling risk.
The lessons and activities provided in the guide are tied to the DVD and are divided by segments. Each segment will contain lessons covering multiple disciplines including business, consumer education, economics, social science, family & consumer science, mathematics and driver education. Lessons and activities related to the three specific vignettes revolve around a more detailed case study provided for each vignette, fleshing out details not seen in the DVD. These case studies will allow students to do more in-depth research and study on the insurance concepts presented in the DVD. While the segments and their lessons can be used independently of one another, they can also be combined as a series.
IEI encourages all insurance companies and agents to become involved in the "Network with Teachers" program. Representatives from an insurance company or organization can hand-deliver Risk, Responsibility, Reality to a local teacher in their area. Educators need support and teaching materials to enhance their ability to instruct young people about risk management. By participating in this program, insurance professionals can become a valuable resource for the teacher.
Additional classroom aids are available on the IEI web site. The web site is updated frequently, presenting the most current and relevant insurance topics. Other programs, materials and information available at no charge to teachers through IEI include:
- IEI's two-week, graduate-level, summer institute program;
- The James L. Osborne Insurance Educator of the Year competition;
- Back issues of IEI's publication, The Insurance Educator;
- Lesson plans, articles, and other resources on Health, Life, Auto and Property Insurance, and careers in the insurance industry.
