U.S. Secretary Rod Paige will be Honored at Insurance Education Foundation Gala Dinner
U.S. Secretary of Education Roderick Paige
has been chosen by The Insurance Education Institute
as their honoree at this years annual dinner in Washington
D.C.
Paige will be the keynote speaker at the September
21st event at the Historic Washington Hilton and Towers.
Paige will also receive The Insurance Education Institute's
Crystal Apple Award, which is bestowed for achievements
in leadership and service in the field of financial
services or education and commitment to the growth and
education of America's young people..
Paige was confirmed by the United States Senate as
the 7th Secretary of Education on January 20, 2001,
following the inauguration of President George W. Bush.
Paige first distinguished himself coaching college-level
athletics, and has always been committed to public education
and the preparation of teachers to excel in their profession.
Included among Secretary Paige's many educational related
pursuits are a decade as Dean of the College of Education
at Texas Southern University. He was also a trustee
and an officer of the Board of Education of the Houston
Independent School District (HISD); superintendent of
HISD; and a member of the
Education Commission of the States. In 2001, he was
named the National Superintendent of the Year by the
American Association of School Administrators.
Secretary Paige's commitment to youth education in
Houston and on a national basis has exemplified the
tradition of the Crystal Apple, first awarded to Gen.
Robert Herres, retired Chairman of USAA, for his tireless
work with youth education.
All proceeds from the dinner will be used to produce
insurance education materials for high school teachers
and their students. The mission of The Insurance Education Institute is to improve the understanding of insurance
and its role in society through the education of teachers
and students.
