November 2000

Dear Friends of IEI:

This third and final edition of Foundation Facts for 2000 will update you on previously reported programs and give you a quick glimpse into the future. By now we hope that you can see we are serious about keeping you informed on a regular basis of our progress. We would like this to be a dialogue whenever possible. So, if there are questions you have or comments that you would like to make, just pick up the phone and call us or tap out a message to bhowell@IEI.org. We welcome your input, and, as always, we value your continuing support of our mission.

Golf Tournament and Silent Auction
The annual IEI Golf Classic, held Saturday, September 23, 2000, in Nashville, Tennessee, was completed in the face of persistent rain and lightning that limited most players to eleven or twelve holes. Despite the weather, spirits were not dampened, and our full complement of golfers was treated to a first class course and renewal of friendships amid the atmosphere of friendly competition. All proceeds from the golf tournament and the silent auction will be used to fund educational materials for teachers and students. IEI thanks all of the hearty players for their support of this annual fundraiser. Special thanks go to our sponsors, including:

Institute Events
The Institute programs were completed in June and July with 137 graduates at our five university sites. This brings the total number of teachers who have attended the course to 1847 since its inception. There is a short five-minute video of the experience from a teacher’s standpoint that is available upon request. It does an excellent job of summarizing the benefits for teachers and students alike. We thank State Farm for their generous donation of filming and editing this video. The Board has also impaneled a Program Evaluation Committee to assess the needs of secondary teachers while evaluating the environment for distance learning. Results of this research will be used to advise the Board on ways to keep our programs relevant and available to the largest possible audience.

James L. Osborne Insurance Educator of the Year
The third annual award for 2000 was presented at the NAMIC convention to Cindy Miller. Cindy is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton and attended IEI's institute in 1995. She teaches Personal Finance and Accounting at Yucca Valley High School in California. She has an impressive web site www.user.lasercom.net/milleryvhs that includes lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations on insurance. Her unique approach to incorporating the material on insurance into everyday experiences is indicative of the type of instruction our graduates use. Cindy is a prime example of the success of our institutes. She was warmly received by the NAMIC convention attendees.

Teachers' Advisory Council
The National Advisory Council of Secondary Teachers convened on July 29th and 30th in Indianapolis. Several teachers joined staff and Board Chairman Bob Bischoff at St. Rita’s Child Care Center prior to the Council meeting. They participated in a retrofit of the facility in cooperation with the Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) and its program to protect America’s children from injury during a disaster. During the Council meeting that followed, the teachers proposed the inclusion of community college teachers and graduate education students in the approved list of applicants for institute programs. In addition, Council members volunteered to be the first contributors of lesson plans that have begun appearing in the IEI newsletter, The Insurance Educator, and those under development for our web site.

Junior Achievement
A three-hour module on insurance was developed for use in the Junior Achievement Economics curriculum. Certain elements have been incorporated into JA written materials already. At this time, we are working to assure that the full text of this informative teaching tool becomes available on both the IEI and JA web sites. This collaboration allows our quality teaching materials to reach a much larger audience while we trade on the influence and impact of our partner. Other such cooperative ventures are welcome, and we would appreciate your help in opening doors in organizations in which you hold a leadership position.

The Insurance Educator
The IEI newsletter has undergone an editorial and graphic renaissance. The first issue directly responding to reader suggestions is in the hands of our teachers and donors. We hope you are pleased with the new look. The new production schedule calls for three issues each year instead of two. We are incurring the increased costs in order to provide new resources, including a lesson plan in each issue, an “Ask the Expert” column, and other useful tools, tips, and handouts for classroom use. We welcome your reaction to this publication, which is the only resource on insurance that some of our teachers receive.
