October 2002

Dear Friends of IEI:

Coaching Changes at IEI
Starting August 1, 2002, The Insurance Education Institute has a new head coach. Jack Clanton, former General Manager of the Kansas Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company and the 2000 NAMIC Chairman of the Board, has become the ChIEI Executive Officer of IEI. Michelle Maclin came on board August 14, 2002, as the new Foundation Manager and has eighteen years of non-profit experience.

IEI Golf Classic
The 13th Annual IEI Golf Classic was held at the picturesque Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego, California. One hundred thirty-seven golfers participated in the 18-hole scramble event won by a foursome of Steve Coffey, Jack Snyder, Tom Kearney, and Michael Wood. A BBQ was held at the golf course making it a fun day for all that participated. A big THANK YOU to participants and sponsors who helped make the tournament a huge success. A special kudos to Bob Harrison, who did an unbelievable job putting it all together.

Ryder Cup Raffle Winner Announced

John Harper of Farm Mutual Reinsurance of Ontario, Canada won the 2002 Ryder Cup drawing. John and his guest traveled to Birmingham, England to experience personally the 2002 Ryder Cup. The championship was held at the world famous Belfry Golf Course. Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, both former Ryder Cup players, designed this course. Thank you to all who participated in the Ryder Cup fundraiser.

More Golf to Come
For the first time, IEI will host a golf tournament in connection with the 2002 NAII Annual Meeting to be held in Los Angeles, California. The location will be the challenging Malibu Country Club. The tournament will be held on October 26. There is still time to register, but hurry. Time is running out on the first ever NAII event.

Teacher of the Year
Patricia (Patty) Wilkinson, a business teacher at Stark County High School in Toulon, Illinois, was named the James L. Osborne Insurance Educator of the Year for 2002. This national award is named in honor of the founder of IEI and is presented to a high school teacher who demonstrates excellence and creativity in providing insurance education to our nation’s high school students. Mrs. Wilkinson’s entry into the competition included teaching strategies, lesson plans, and student activities created to teach high school students about insurance, enabling them to become knowledgeable insurance consumers in their adult lives. As a prerequisite to entering the competition, teachers must be a graduate of one of IEI’s Insurance Education Institutes. Mrs. Wilkinson attended the Insurance Education Institute at Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, in 2001.

2002 Insurance Education Institutes a Big Success
“I cannot totally express in words my gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such a worthwhile program.” “I really learned a great deal about insurance and will have much to teach the class when we talk about insurance.” “I hope to include information on careers as well as the insurance material in the courses I teach this year.” “Having had time to reflect upon my experience, I just want you to know how valuable this Institute was for me, personally and professionally. There is no one that I have encountered since my return who has not learned about my experiences.” “This Institute has definitely had a positive impact on what we will be teaching. I feel most confident in telling you that contributions to this program is money well spent.” These are just a few of the comments from some of the 135 teachers who attended this summer’s insurance institute program at five universities around the country. The purpose of this program is to enable high school teachers to become more effective in teaching insurance. Our graduates now number 2,130; and without your support, this important program would not be possible!

John C. Etling scholarship awards were presented to the teacher at each institute who demonstrated the highest degree of excellence. Those receiving this year’s award were Chelsy Harris of Colorado Springs, Colorado (St. John’s University); Brandi Hammond-Givens of Homestead, Florida (Florida State University); Janet Schaefer of El Paso, Illinois (Illinois State University); Mike Rich of Modesto, California (California State University, Sacramento); and Gary Dresback of Huntsville, Missouri (Drake University).

“Choice, Chance, Control II”
The IEI Board of Directors is currently reviewing proposals for a new insurance education video. The original video has been well circulated and has retained amazing shelf life due primarily to the Seinfeld series going into syndication and Michael Richards’ (Kramer) popularity. It will be a difficult task to top the effectiveness of the original “Choice, Chance, Control” video, but that will be the objective.
