October 2001

Dear Friends of IEI:

The Foundation Board of Directors opted to cancel its board meeting and the awards dinner/golf classic that followed in the aftermath of terrorist attacks on the nation’s capitol. As a result, we missed seeing many of our long-time supporters at these IEI events and the NAMIC convention that usually follows. Until we can grip your hands and share the fellowship of our events for 2002, we’ll need to use this format to continue to express our gratitude for your support and the confidence you have shown in our mission. The Board has met by conference call, and the results of those actions are reported below. We at the Foundation send our wishes for peace and a speedy return to normalcy. Our condolences and prayers are extended to those who have suffered loss. May the healing power of friends, family, faith and time sustain us all.

Sincerely,

William J. Howell, CLU, ChFC, CAE
CEO

2001 Institute Series
The Institute programs were completed in June and July with 148 graduates, swelling our total to 1,995 teachers who have completed the course to date. We see and hear the teacher comments all the time, and they are effusive in their praise for the experience. For our supporters, there is a short five-minute video that captures the essence of the program and teachers' reactions to it. We would be happy to make it available to you. Just call or email the request.

The winners of the John C. Etling Scholarships awarded to the teachers at each school who demonstrated proficiency, excellence and enthusiasm for the subject were: Julie Binneboese, a mathematics teacher at Iowa City West High School in Iowa City, Iowa, at Drake University; Don Darling, a business teacher at Cambridge Central School in Cambridge, New York, and Diana Weinapple, a business teacher at Dulaney High School in Timonium, Maryland, at St. John’s University; Ann Neely, a business teacher at McClellan Business Technology Magnet High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, at California State University; Patty Wilkinson, a consumer education teacher at Stark County High School in Toulon, Illinois, at Illinois State University; and Tomica Wright, a business teacher at Griffin Middle School, in High Point, North Carolina, at Florida State University.

Finally, administrators from the five universities will be on site in Indianapolis during the first weekend in November to debrIEI results of the 2001 series and to begin the planning for 2002. We will report the outcome of these meetings in our next issue.
