Jay McKinstrey Receives Insurance Educator of the Year Award for 2001

The Insurance Education Institute (IEI) awarded the James L. Osborne Insurance Educator of the Year award for 2001 to Jay McKinstrey of Pella High School in Pella, Iowa. In honor of IEI's founder, James L. Osborne, this award is presented each year to a high school teacher who demonstrates excellence in providing insurance education to our nation's students.

Mr. McKinstrey has a degree in business education from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa and a Master of Science degree in Sport Management at Iowa State University. Previous to his current position, he taught business, coached basketball, and served as athletic director at the high school level and served as an assistant football coach at the college level. He is currently in his seventh year of teaching business and coaching football at Pella High School.

As winner of the fourth annual competition, Mr. McKinstrey receives national recognition and a monetary award for himself and for his school. Also as recipient of this award, he will serve on IEI's National Advisory Council of Secondary Teachers (NACST) and as one of the judges for the 2002 Insurance Educator of the Year competition.

Mr. McKinstrey's entry included lesson plans, student activities, and teaching strategies focused on teaching high school students about insurance and how to be knowledgeable insurance consumers in their adult lives. McKinstrey attended the Insurance Education Institute at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1999.

To be eligible for this national competition, nominees must be professional educators who have completed an Insurance Education Institute sponsored by IEI. They also must have taught insurance during the current school year in a course leading to a high school diploma.
