Cindy Miller Named National Insurance Educator of the Year
The Insurance Education Institute (IEI) recognized Cindy Miller, a business teacher and department chair at Yucca Valley High School in Yucca Valley, California, as the recipient of the James L. Osborne Insurance Educator of the Year award for 2000. In honor of IEI's founder, James L. Osborne, this award is presented each year to a high school teacher who demonstrates excellence in providing insurance education to our nation's students.
As winner of the third annual competition, Ms. Miller received an all-expense paid trip for two to Nashville, Tennessee, where she received her award on September 25 at the opening session of the annual convention of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), of which IEI is an affiliate. Also as recipient of this award, Ms. Miller will serve on IEI's National Advisory Council of Secondary Teachers (NACST) and as one of the judges for the 2001 insurance educator of the year competition. Both Ms. Miller and her school received monetary awards in recognition of her achievement.
To be eligible, nominees must be professional educators who have completed an Insurance Education Institute for High School Teachers sponsored by IEI. They also must have taught insurance during the current school year in a course leading to a high school diploma.
Ms. Miller's entry included teaching strategies, lesson plans and student activities created to teach high school students about insurance, enabling them to become knowledgeable insurance consumers in their adult lives. Miller attended the Insurance Education Institute for High School Teachers at California State University, Sacramento, in 1995.
