Teachers Learn About Insurance at Summer Institutes

November 23, 2004

"I have taken with me some great ideas on insurance that I can share with my students as well as my fellow teachers. I have found that I learned so much that I can use in my private life."

"I come out of this program a better teacher knowing what I know now, and also a better consumer. Thanks for the opportunity!"

"This institute has definitely given me more insurance knowledge to take back to the classroom. It was also a great opportunity to network with other teachers to get new instructional ideas!"

"I thought the institute was very beneficial and provided much more information than I thought possible. I can now go back to my class and feel knowledgeable and prepared to teach my class about insurance."

"Not only did the institute exceed my expectations, it helped me to realize that students need to be educated in as many insurance topics as possible."

These are just a few of the comments IEI received after the completion of this summer‘s Insurance Education Institutes for high school teachers.

Institute graduates now number 2,390, attending from all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda! One hundred and fifty educators graduated from this year’s program, returning to their classroom reinforced with new information, resources, lesson plans, classroom materials, and three graduate credits. Kudos to those hosting universities who worked so hard to successfully promote and conduct this year’s program— St. John’s University, Drake University, the University of Central Arkansas, Illinois State University and Mississippi State University.

Our partners at Mississippi State University have introduced the use of technology to deliver their educational curriculum. The teachers attending the MSU institute spent one week on campus and completed the second week’s work online. The Illinois State University Institute participants were a part of a new teaching model incorporating “service learning” concepts. Our goal is to improve our effectiveness in the classroom and to introduce young people to the value and satisfaction of contributing to their own communities. Our thanks to State Farm Insurance Company for introducing us to this concept and collaborating with the National Youth Leadership Council.

These insurance institutes are open to high school teachers who teach insurance either as a specific course or as part of another subject, high school administrators and guidance counselors, community college instructors, and graduate students majoring in education. The purpose of this program is to enable teachers to become more effective in teaching insurance by providing the tools they need for understanding all forms of insurance, with an emphasis on the relevance to high school students and their families.

Scholarships cover the cost of on-campus room and board, classroom instruction and materials, and the graduate credit. Teachers pay only for travel and weekend meals!
